June 2. Kathmandu. Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital has conducted the first living donor liver transplant in its history becoming the second hospital to do so in Nepal.

The team of doctors was led by Dr. Ramesh Singh Bhandari. The team took around 16 hours to complete the transplant. The donor was the 33 years old daughter of the 55 years old recipient.

The cost of liver transplant in Nepal is around Rs. 25 lakh and the same can cost as much as Rs. 50 lakh in India.

The major cause of liver failure is excessive intake of alcohol and hepatitis.
