May 10. Kathmandu. Since the government failed to enforce its own contract with the road repair contractor, the angry protestors descended on the streets. The initial hours of protest were peaceful but that changed once the locals started blocking the roads. The government responded with charging batons and tear gas.

The case is that of Chabahil – Sankhu road, the contract was signed four years ago but the black-topping was never complete. During these many years, the contractor simply delayed work for one pretext or other.

The responsible contractor had to buckle under pressure. The contractor has signed an agreement to start black-topping the road immediately while taking care of other road related infrastructures such as drainage and sewage.
