May 10. Kathmandu. The government is pushing for legislation that consists of tightening the media. The new bill that is registered in the parliament has a provision to fine the news media outlets, editors and journalist up to Rs. 1 million if the content published tarnishes reputation of any individual. This has angered Journalists and media houses.
The new bill aims to amend and integrate the Media Council Act. It is worth stating that the current media law doesn’t give rights to slap monetary punishments against journalists or media houses to Press Council Nepal, a media watchdog organization.
